Introduction

Equans has delivered a 1.4 MVA rooftop solar installation at Stora Enso’s Langerbrugge paper mill in Ghent. To secure compliance with the Belgian Transmission System Operator (TSO) Elia’s Type B grid code requirements for Power Park Modules (PPMs), Enersynt was engaged to oversee the technical grid integration process, to perform the required power system studies, and to deliver the electrical simulation models to Elia.

Project Background

Stora Enso operates the Langerbrugge Mill, a major producer of recycled fibre materials. To further strengthen its sustainability strategy, the company opted to utilise previously unused roof areas for photovoltaic generation, contributing directly to regional renewable energy targets in Flanders.

Role of Enersynt

Enersynt supported Carbon Shift (Equans) in achieving Elia’s grid connection approval through the following activities:

Electrical Power Systems Modeling

Our engineering team built comprehensive RMS and EMT models of the PV installation using DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSCAD. These models incorporated detailed inverter representations and formed the foundation for subsequent compliance assessments and studies.

Grid Compliance Studies

Enersynt performed a full suite of studies to demonstrate adherence to Elia’s Type B PPM criteria. This included static simulations to evaluate reactive power capability, load flow analyses to verify equipment loading and voltage levels, and dynamic RMS simulations to examine frequency response, fault-ride-through behaviour, and reactive current injection during voltage dips. Inverter parameters were refined throughout the process to ensure alignment with Elia’s technical expectations.

Stakeholder Coordination

To streamline project execution, Enersynt collaborated closely with the inverter manufacturer to define model requirements and validate performance outcomes. We also supported Equans in interface meetings with Elia and in completing the Type B data questionnaire and overall grid compliance submission package, incorporating results and parameters from the compliance studies.

Testimonials

“At Equans, we believe that the energy transition starts with decisive collaboration. Thanks to Enersynt’s expertise, we were able to install a high-performing PV system for Stora Enso and meet Elia’s stringent Type B grid compliance requirements."

Michael Catrysse, Project Manager, Carbon Shift (Equans)

Conclusion

The successful completion of the grid compliance studies, supported by close coordination with Equans, ensured a smooth approval process with Elia. Beyond delivering a technically robust and reliable outcome, the project also contributes meaningfully to the region’s renewable energy objectives. It reflects Enersynt’s commitment both to ensuring client success and to advancing the broader transition toward sustainable, low carbon energy systems.
